about

'Gleason’s new EP presents a refined blend of intimately jazzy piano and melancholic ambience that is as appealing as it is unsettling. The sound of thunder segues into a darkly beautiful progression of pianos and guitars, Gleason’s steady tenor smoothly hovering with a restrained sadness the likes of which are usually reserved for cigarette smoking lounge divas lamenting lost loves. With the six-count rhythm and an off-kilter bridge in the pre-chorus, along with his multi-instrumental abilities being fully on display with “Destruction,” Gleason’s songwriting talent is immediately apparent and continues into “Unruddered” with its layers of chilled piano and swirling, powerful guitars and drums. While past comparisons to Tori Amos are certainly apt, especially in the prevalence of the piano and his jazzy chord progressions and time signatures eschewing the simplicity of pop conventions. Similarly, Gleason’s lyrical vocabulary is of especial note, conveying a depth of thought and an almost literary sensibility not commonly heard in this day and age. “Polarity” swings by with the ever elusive five-count slowing and speeding up adding to the eerie atmosphere of the song to great effect along with the subtle layers of organs and haunting synthesizers, while “Calculated” moves with all the wistful energy of Nick Cave at his darkest. The title track ends the EP with a sweet sadness of wavering synths and twinkling pianos followed by off-beat vocals that seem to move at their own rhythm before converging with the music. As on the rest of the EP, the song builds on its base to crescendo choruses that balance dissonance and noise with harmonic order. Only his second release and Brett Gleason demonstrates a profoundly advanced musical talent. The production is as solid as the performance and the songs present a thoughtfulness of arrangement and theme that will have many listening to the EP on repeat, evoking a simultaneous sense of sorrow and serenity.' - Regen Mag regenmag.com/reviews/brett-gleason-the-thawing/

Track Name: Destruction
We'll figure this out,
if no one knows you're sick,
it's your job to let them know.

The fever came on slow,
Explosion came before the flames,
Got thrown through the revolving door.

If you think you're paralyzed,
it's just the mirage,
of the broken man who broke all his bones.

Destruction, was beautiful.
Cold grays and reds blend to burn,
like the sunset.
We sink in, to invisible needs,
but my lies are so far away
and my paintings will fade someday.

I'll sound the siren.
Wave the flag of serenity,
spit out what your eyes were too large to see.

And indulge my desire to,
steamroll right over you,
don't need you hear to help clean up this mess.

Destruction, was bountiful,
spent the days away in a
deep & dark, deluded haze.
We sought this, bitter irreverie,
anything but feel and cope,
or deal with what is real.
Obstructions, that I put in my way,
just so long as I'll have,
something about which to complain.

Destruction distracts,
It fills no holes in the soul you cracked.
And obstructions detract,
from cleaning up this mess you have.

The war zone's not beauty's home,
just turn your back and leave,
it alone.
Track Name: Unruddered
Now breaking down enzymes,
de-constructing codes.
Forget about past times,
prepare to dispose.

Disintegrate patterns,
abscond their growth.
Inhibit reactors,
divert and reload.

Compose your responses,
resume natural flow.
Synapses are lapses,
perceptive muscles.

I've tried to toe the line,
obeyed all the road signs,
and now that I've arrived I find:
That is wasn't worth it.

I've carefully picked my fights,
tied tongues and muffled sighs.
And now that I've denied I'm found:
Unruddered and Reckless.

Not saying it this time,
decided to go.
All efforts were useless,
acknowledge it so.

Forget your devotions,
survivals no joke.
Undermine detractors,
diminish their gloat.

Deflect the transmission,
of dueling rivals,
forgive the transgressions,
of human animals.

I've carefully chosen sides,
weighed lows against their highs,
closed eyes and tried to resign myself:
To Never Question.

The choices that I've made,
practically calculate,
the safe route from A to B has left me:
An Unfettered Recluse,

Who's seen 10,000 things,
charred fields abandoned dreams,
uprooted themes and half planned schemes
have left me:
Unruddered and Reckless.
Track Name: Calculated
CALCULATED

Highly calculated,
highly manipulated.
Analyzing sensations,
creating my calculations.

Unnaturally complicated,
willfully obfuscated.
Strangely infatuated,
with the world I've created:

This place I've made,
has kept me safe,
has kept me wrapped,
in waves of hate.

Cuz when you're down,
you feel no fear,
no faith to lose,
no failure here.

Highly calculated,
highly deliberated.
Breaking down math equations,
creating falsifications.

Ignoring all that is fated,
focus on the frustrated.
Destroy the organization,
reject all of god's creations:

I'll calculate,
the emotional weight,
to balance the scales,
lower my heart rate:

This place I've craved,
for quick escape,
from ambitions,
and fulfilled fates:

Magnify your identities into,
infinite possibilities you can,
feel multitudes pool around you and,
dualities will not confound you can:

Invite them in,
Calculated.
Track Name: Polarity
If you want me to, I will want it too.
Assert the self or kill, the self for the few.
Stones and bones I give, myself up to you.
Well I can't fall for this, don't expect it to feel real.

Give into dissonant thoughts.
Accept the opposite sounds.
Contradiction can't be found.
Up needs the right, wrong needs down.

If you ignore me, I will just grow loud.
The more you try to forget, the more I'm around.
Decadent indulgence, ascetic restraint:
Are both extremes that can't please, can't be indulged or disdained.

Give in to clashing ideals.
Accept the polar extremes.
Common ground cannot be found.
Don't complain, don't make a sound.

Don't try to merge opposites,
let them take you for a trip.
The one you feel now is real,
two futures are later revealed.
Track Name: The Thawing
THE THAWING

I will break the rules and then I'll go and make my own.
Follow endless question marks do they lead back to home?
I felt a fall the world was small and not quite what it seemed.
Nobody knows nor have they chosen, are we really free?

I will follow tangents until their logical end.
Nothing is forbidden there is no such thing as sin.
A different world per pair of eyes with nothing that's certain,
be led by change yet keep your name forget your restrictions.

I will shed the thinking that has let me come to this.
Recreate sensations one should never come to miss.
Untangle knots you tied yourself release them from your grasp.
Refresh the strands genetic brand and face the thwarted flesh.

Freed from the name.
Freed from the game.
Freed of the rain,
and the frozen.
Freed from the pain,
and the poison.

Refresh the page.
Resurrect your fate.
Break from the chains.
Look at your face,
and accept the stains.

Freed from restraints.
Freed from the gaze,
his dictatory ways.
We're finally free,
to exist naturally:
However messy that could be:

Commence The Thawing!
